The Floydada Whirlwind’s fell 7-1 to The Bushland Falcons at West Texas A&M University on Saturday.
Floydada was led by Xavier Cervera’s hitting. Cervera went 1-3 and scored one run and tripled in the sixth inning. Cervera is one of three seniors to play their final game for Floydada.
“Those guys are like my sons, and I tell them all the time I won’t ever treat you differently than I treat my own kids,” he said. “They know I love them today and I’ll love them tomorrow. They are just great kids, good role models and have provided great leadership, and they are welcome in my dugout anytime.”
Seth Nielson was a workhorse on the bump for Floydada Whirlwinds. Nielson pitched seven innings and allowed six earned runs, 11 hits and one walk while striking out one.
Gerald Reyna recorded the win for the Bushland Falcons. He allowed one run over seven innings. He struck out seven, walked four and surrendered three hits.
Bushland was sparked by Blane Barnett and Colter Cornelius, who teamed up for six hits and four RBIs and four doubles by Barnett.
Bushland Falcons got two-run boosts in each of the third, fourth and sixth. In the third, Bushland Falcons scored on a two-run double by Nick Welch, plating Barnett and Cornelius.
The lone run of the game for Floydada Whirlwinds crossed the plate in the sixth inning on a passed ball.
Floydada finished the season with 18 wins and Area Champions for the first time in program history.
“Even though today is a sad day because the ride is over, we have a lot to look forward to,” Floydada coach Jamie Seago said. “This is the best team to ever come through Floydada. We made history with our 18 wins and getting to the area round. The great thing about this team is that we aren’t led by one superstar . . . we’ve got nine solid guys taking the field every day.”
